On April 14th 1912, the RMS Titanic hit and iceberg and sank. It sank into the North Atlantic Ocean estimated to 400 miles South of Newfloundland Canada. 1,503 died which was partially because there was only 20 lifeboats which were supposed carry 1,178 in all but there was appoximatley 2,208 people on board.
Astor did die when the ship sank and left his family behind who made it. " Icebergs loomed up and fell astern and we never slackened. It was an anxious time with the Titanic's fateful experience very close in our minds" -Captain Arthur H Rostron, Commander of the Carpathia (recounting the Carpathia’s desperate journey to the site of the sinking)
